Car Not Accelerating

It's vital that you have a service center available to you when you have car issues that need to be addressed. Being able to trust the professionals that are working on your vehicle is also essential. At Capitol Chevrolet, we strive to build a trustworthy and reliable relationship with all of our clients. If you notice something isn't quite right when you're behind the wheel, or you have a check engine light illuminated, we recommend scheduling an appointment as soon as you can.

If you've been noticing that your vehicle isn't accelerating as quickly as it should be when you're trying to gain speed, there are a few common issues that might be going on.

Mass Air Flow Sensor / Oxygen Sensor Malfunction

These two sensors are critical parts of the acceleration process. They will constantly monitor things like the amount of fuel and air that's passing through your engine. If you find either of these parts dirty or in need of repair, this could be slowing down your vehicle. A mass airflow sensor can usually be cleaned or serviced, while an oxygen sensor requires complete replacement.

Issues with a Throttle Position Sensor

The throttle valve inside your engine will open and close at various angles to control the amount of acceleration you experience when you step on the gas pedal. If there's a breakdown in communication between your throttle valve sensor and your computer, this is where acceleration may not be as quick as you'd like it to be.

Replacement of a Dirty Fuel Filter

A fuel filter will become dirty with dust, dirt, and sludge. The amount of mileage that you're putting on your car, along with the places you're driving in, will determine how often you should be having the filter replaced. We recommend anywhere between 20,000 and 60,000 miles. More information should be available in your owner's manual.

Changing a Dirty Engine Air Filter

An engine air filter is designed to last for quite a while. The maximum amount of mileage you can keep it around is usually around 45,000 miles. If you're doing a lot of traveling, the time frame might be closer to 20,000 miles. We can take a look at your air filter to make sure it's providing you with the potential for ample acceleration.

Contact Capitol Chevrolet if you would like our certified technicians to address any potential issues contributing to slower acceleration rates while you're driving.
