Chevrolet Awarded $165,000 in Scholarships to 2022 HBCU Marketing and Journalism Interns

When Chevrolet committed to creating an opportunity for Historically Black College or University (HBCU) students to create content through the Discover the Unexpected (DTU) fellowship program, it intended to provide them a chance to write about the benefits of electric vehicles (EVs) and develop journalism skills.

Recently, DTU awarded $165,000 in scholarships for eleven HBCU students through the program. The award enabled them to achieve mentorship through a 10-week course as interns. With the intent of providing better opportunities for those students to gain real-world experiences as they begin their careers in media and journalism, Chevrolet succeeds in accomplishing its goal.

Potential Converts to Progress in Media and Journalism

With the $165,000 award, Chevrolet recognized the potential of the journalism talent of eleven students. The students each received a $10,000 grant and a $5,000 stipend for their content writing, which included providing content for various social media outlets and receiving mentorship at a black-owned media company. According to Steve Majoros, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing, the students' potential positively impacted the company's marketing team. The DTU program allowed them to convey the various benefits of EVs in their community. Their passion and professionalism exemplified Chevrolet's commitment to excellence.

Future Dreams Being Supported and Fulfilled

Since Chevrolet established DTU in 2016, the company has awarded over $600,000 to HBCU students. When asked about the future of recent students who received scholarships, actor, model, and entertainer Terrence Jenkins, also known as Terrence J, said, "As a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, I understand the value of HBCUs. That is why I am passionate about this opportunity and excited to engage with future students who are pursuing journalism and marketing."

Best known for the film, "Think Like a Man," with co-star Kevin Hart and co-anchoring on the E! Network, Jenkins received a mass communication degree from North Carolina A&T State University, an HBCU. He is currently a program ambassador and is visible in Chevrolet's EV commercial ads. The company also has a long-standing relationship with the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA). With the latest award to HBCU students, the collaboration between Chevrolet and NNPA extends well into the future for developing the next generation of journalists and marketers.
