The History of Chevrolet

Way back in 1911, a man named William C. Durant started the Chevrolet Motor Company. In 1918, GM acquired this company, and the rest is history. Durant's vision was simple. Another early leader of the Chevrolet brand envisioned "a car for every purse and purpose," focusing heavily on pricing and the idea that each hard-working American deserved to own a dependable vehicle.

From the Original Bowtie to the All-Electric Pickup

Chevrolet's history is a long one, and no automaker in America was more fit to make that journey than Chevy. A couple of years after Chevrolet Motor Company first formed, they used the iconic bowtie emblem. That emblem is still proudly emblazoned on Chevrolet vehicles today. It was in the 50s and 60s, though, that Chevrolet really came into its own and started to be a leader and a legend in the industry. Their willingness to experiment and the diversity of their designs caught on big with the public.

Models like the Bel Air and Corvette played a big part in why we still respect the Chevrolet name today. Those early models inspired an enthusiasm for driving that went far beyond the Sunday drive. The Corvette remains one of the most fearsome names in sports cars and recently offered up 670 horsepower to modern buyers. That's a far cry from the first Corvette's 150 horsepower, but those older Corvettes mark a turning point for car lovers. They showed that cars could be more than relaxing transportation. They could be fun.

You'll probably recognize the names of many Chevrolet cars from the '60s and '70s: the Vega, the Camaro, and the Monte Carlo. Once again, the Camaro remains a modern vehicle with brand-new specs. Other models like the Monte Carlo and Vega are out there somewhere in used form, but they aren't produced anymore. Chevrolet continues to change the game in the modern era with their first all-electric Silverado pickup truck and other inspiring designs like the Traverse and the Malibu. And to think, all this success dates back to over 100 years ago. Chevrolet is a reminder that the good things in life tend to stick around.
